The Chapel of Alumieira is located in the “Largo da Alumieira”. It is in this Square where the “Feiras da Alumieira” (Alumieira Fairs) take place at Easter. “Saltar o rego” (Jump the furrow). Every Easter there is an activity in Alumieira, Loureiro Parish, "P'ra ver os burros” (To see the donkeys). Easter to Easter, year after year, on monday afternoon the square becomes too small for so many people. Since long time “Saltar o rego” is the profane part, popular, in the Holy Easter time. Probably it is an Arab heritage, they were here between VIII and X centuries a.C.. Several times centenary, there is in this square a traditional event supposed to be unique in the Portugal. “Saltar o rego” is a well-known expression, symbolizing the horses and donkeys racing which takes place on Easter mondays, next to the “Largo da Alumieira”.
In this square, it is possible to see the bronze Monument to the Emigrant, representing a young man, in life-size, sitting, thoughtful. It is signed by H. Moreira 1966, on a granite pedestal and also the bust of the counsellor Dr . Albino dos Reis in bronze, dated from the 22sd of December of 1968.
