Ichnofossils of Mourinha (geosite 17)

Arouca
Description
The Ichnofossils of Mourinha appear in outcrops characterized by the amount and diversity of ichnofossils of the Arenigian age (Inferior Ordovician). Here, there are several stratification surfaces, quite vertical, from where it is easy to observe several and different ichnofossils, namely Cruziana ispp., with special emphasis on one trace of Cruziana furcifera with more than 3.5 m length. The size of the plates and the excellence of the ichnofossils represented make it a geosite of high palaeontology interest and allow the creation of molds for museum collections. The fact that they are remnants of the activity of contemporary organisms to sedimentation provides them a stratigraphic interest. Once the palaeontology record has been preserved due to the occurrence of special and rare sedimentological and paleogeographic factors, this is also one of the interests to point out.
