Bouças Monastery (Quinta do Passal)

Matosinhos
Description
Few remains are left from the original monastery that stood here and was the origin of the oldest residential area in the city. The exact date of its foundation is unknown but we know that it already existed in 944. It was endowed in 1128 by D. Teresa to the bishop of Porto D. Hugo and, in 1196,D. Sancho I donated it to his daughter D. Mafalda.

In 1249 D. Mafalda integrated the monastery in the Cistercian Order and commissioned the construction of her own house next to the church. In 1542 D. João III annexed the patronage of Bouças to the University of Coimbra.

During the middle ages this monastery housed the image of Bom Jesus de Matosinhos. This image, which represents crucified Christ, dates back to the 13th century, and was transferred in the 16th century to the Church of Bom Jesus de Matosinhos.
