Fafe is proud to have two of the most famous marching bands in the country, the bands of Golães and Revelhe. These marching bands bring the great symphonies of famous composers of all times to the popular classes.
The marching band of Revelhe started in 1854, in the same place where the marching band of Golães made its debut.
Its legal name is “Sociedade Filarmónica Fafense” and perhaps its history is the most reputed of the two existing bands. It stemmed from a much older marching band, the “Banda de Música Leonardo”, some members of which moved to this new band.
The band plays at many venues all across the country, proudly taking the name of the land and showing the expertise of its musicians to the entire country. In 1960, the band became very famous after it came in second place at the 1st Grand National Competition of Marching Bands and Civilian Bands, in Lisbon, receiving the Diploma of Special Artistic Merit.
In 1971 the band competed again in the 2nd Grand National Competition of Marching Bands and Civilian Band and won the first prize. This award is the crowning glory of the band, making it famous both in Portugal and abroad.
The band of Revelhe was awarded the Gold Medal of the Council of Fafe for its outstanding success.
