The Soares dos Reis National Museum was the Old Porto Museum of Paintings and Prints and the first public art museum in Portugal, founded in 1833. It is installed in the Carrancas Palace since 1940. The Carrancas palace was built in the late XVIII century by a rich family from Porto and it is classified as property of public interest. The National Museum Soares dos Reis has collections of pottery, sculpture, engraving, jewelery, furniture, painting, textiles and glass, and especially the “Desterrado”, which is the patron`s museum masterpiece. The museum suffered an extensive renovation and expansion intervention, preserving the characteristics of the historic building, according to the project of the architect Fernando Távora, who endowed the museum with new and qualified interior and exterior spaces. It has a cafeteria and a library which are accessible by appointment, education service and multimedia room.
