Shipbuilding is one of the activities that characterize the region of Vila do Conde. It is one of the oldest industries in the country and date of the eleventh and twelfth centuries the creation of the first shipyards in this county and, at the time of the Portuguese expansion, most of the boats that departed towards North Africa and America were built in Vila do Conde. Although, since the sixteenth century, this activity has fallen into decay, shipyards are still one of its attractions.
Currently the shipyards are situated on the left bank of the river Ave, in Azurara parish.
