The Santa Maria da Feira Castle is one of Portugal’s most remarkable military monuments. The diversity of its defensive resources, used between the 11th and 16th centuries, makes it a unique example of Portuguese military architecture. For both Feira and Portugal, it has always represented a symbol of national identity. Throughout history, it has played several roles: a camp during Roman occupation, a bulwark against Norman invasions, a military fort during the Reconquest, regional military headquarters, the major political centre that led to Portugal’s independence and dwelling place of royal and noble families. The Santa Maria da Feira Castle Oversight Commission, in partnership with DRCN, has developed a Project for the Castle’s Conservation and Refurbishment, relying on European financing, which basically consisted of carrying out conservation and restoration works in the Chapel and conservation and renovation works in the Keep. Today, the Castle is prepared to play the role of cultural centre for the vast region around it, once known as the Land of Santa Maria.
