Quinta da Senhora do Convent surrounds the Távora River, a tributary of the Douro River. The farm originated from the Cistercian monastery of São Pedro das Águias.
S. Pedro das Águias Convent, in Quinta do Convento, is a private estate. It was built to replace the old Monastery of S. Pedro das Águias, aiming to find better conditions to survive. The “new” monastery shows only a few architectural traces of the old Romanesque Cistercian building, as it underwent many renovations in subsequent periods, yet it still preserves some of the 17th century architectural features, in particular the modest cloister and its large church.
Its closure was ordered by the Marquis of Pombal as it had been used as the pantheon of the Távora family. Later, it was reopened by Queen D. Maria I. The façade of São Pedro church is in Baroque style. It was extinguished in 1934 and in 1936 it was destroyed by a fire. The building was recovered, keeping its structural plan and original architecture. Its entrance, gardens, winery and cellars – where we find the delicious wine produced in this farm – are well worth a visit.
The company's agricultural and mining, installed in this beautiful convent, starts its activity at 08:30h to 13:00h, and, in the afternoon is open from 14:00h to 17:00h. This is a farm that, for now, do not bet on the tourism front, but there is the possibility to visit the convent cloisters, and, before you have to go to reception to open the gates that give access to this magnificent monument. It is also possible to make a quick visit to the cellars and wine cellar at Quinta Senhora do Convento, where it is served a Port of Honour and explained production methods.
