S. Paio Castro was discovered in the 1950’s by Fernando Lanhas and D. Domingos de Pinho Brandão. Since then it has been partially destroyed by plants from various curious people with mostly good intentions. From 1993 to 1996, archaeological excavations were carried out in order to save the Castro from destruction. It was the subject of a recovery draft. It is the only Maritime Castro that is part of the Portuguese Northwest Peninsular.
