Through Penafiel, it used to pass an important way, used for a long time and which connected Braga and Viseu through Guimarães, Vizela and Penafiel, crossing the council in order to cross the Tâmega River. In Marco de Canaveses, the way was used to cross the Douro River through the Várzea, going south through Castelo de Paiva and Arouca. The use of its trace came to our days, being nowadays one of the main axis of circulation of the council, where the Ponte Medieval de Santa Marta (Santa Marta Medieval Bridge) was integrated. The granitic bridge has a trestle shaped deck, with a low inclination, settled in an unique round arch, on stonework, with blind pillars, being their foundation settled in the excavated fittings in the outcrop.
