Pillory and the Mermaid Fountain

Carrazeda de Ansiães

The pillory of Carrazeda de Ansiães was built in the mid-18th century, when the town hall was transferred from the walled village of Ansiães to Carrazeda de Ansiães. The structure is built of granite ashlar resting on a four-stepped paving. The column is made up of a smooth-faced  octagonal shaft and the chapitel bears the coat-of-arms of D. João V. The fountain has a tank and a central stem made up of four mermaids  fonte é um chafariz com aligned vertically in the form of caryatids.
