The Municipal Youth Centre is a space designed to support young people in various areas, in an attitude of intervention and prevention of risk situations. It results from a wager of the Municipality of Vila do Conde to address education as a global process that goes far beyond the boundaries of the school. The council has provided this area with structures and equipment that enable young people to have healthy leisure activities, cultural development, recreation and socialising, psycho-pedagogical guidance, and social work, vocational training courses, among others, contributing in this way to the education of the youth and familiarity with the latest communication technologies and information.
The building which houses all these activities is a beautiful building from the late nineteenth century / early twentieth century which housed, up to the 1930s, as the Vila do Conde Casino. During the 30s, an education college particularly for boys was set up and later included students of both sexes - the S. José College - which was in working order as such until 1988. At this time, the City Council bought the property as it was very rundown. The restoration and rehabilitation of the building was designed to maintain the original outlines, although two extensions were made, allowing the property to provide a framework for optimal functional areas.
