The Migrations and Communities Museum was opened on 12 July 2001 by decision of the City Council of Fafe as a virtual platform, under the name of Emigration and Communities Museum. In September 2009 the museum was housed on the ground floor of the Municipal Cultural Centre. The Migrations and Communities Museum, the first of its kind in Portugal is intended for the study, preservation and communication of material and symbolic expressions of migrations and, in particular, the return of Portuguese emigrants. Its purpose is to also study the migratory flows and, in particular, Portuguese emigration, focusing on the emigration trend to Brazil, in the 19th century and early 20th century, and on the emigration flows to European countries, in the second half of the 20th century. The museum is also focused on the impacts of emigration resulting from the intermingling of people and cultures, on the economic, social and cultural history, leading to its social and historical study.
