Designed by the architect João Queirós, this unique monument, was offered to Mondim de Basto by the commendator José de Carvalho Camões and has inscribed the names of the townspeople fallen in the 1st World War.
It has been placed right in the middle of the public garden especially built for the purpose. This pleasant place, surrounded by a beautiful “camelia” collection, took the name April 9th Square, in memory of all the heroes died during the La Lys Battle on that day and became a daily meeting point for all generations.
It was officially inaugurated on May 11, 1930.
