Meandros do Paiva (geosite 20)

Arouca
Description
Located near the Janarde village, and easily observed from its highest point, this geosite is composed by two big sinuosity in the Paiva river’s course. Actually, the “meandros do Paiva” (Paiva’s meanders) are not really meanders, once these structures are only formed as the exclusive result of the fluvial dynamics in the terminal sections of the rivers (senility phase). They are “false meanders” inducted by the tectonic and the lithological differentiation, thus originating a wonderful landscape.
