A landmark building of Portuguese modern architecture, the market was built following the demolition of a existing block. ARS – Architects: Fortunato Cabral, Morais Soares and Cunha Leão were the authors of the architectural design, dated from 1939, and inaugurated on May 27th, 1952.
The North facade is decorated with ceramic panels designed by Americo Soares Braga. Classified as a National Monument since 2013, it keeps its original function as a traditional market, combined with stunning architectural beauty.
Because of its location, it has to be seen as the anchor for urban and commercial revitalization of Matosinhos´s historical center, for the local population or tourists.
