The festival and fairs in honour of Our Lady of Livração went from being local 'pilgrimage' to obligatory events in the town of Boticas. Throughout the third weekend of August, many visitors are attracted to the religious festivities. This festival hit its peak in 1936, when the town marked its 100th anniversary. Thousands of people participated in the lengthy procession of many floats each representing different themes. Over the years, until today, this festival still continues and maintains its importance. It is considered the highlight of pilgrimage in this region proven by the thousands of people who still year after year visit and participate in the procession through the streets of the town. Associated with these festivities, is the presence of a statue of St. Christopher in the river, carrying baby Jesus on his shoulder and holding a boatman stick in his hand, representing the legend of the crossing of the River Jordan.
