The D. João's Pond, located in the Montemuro Mountains has a strong cultural, agricultural and environment value, highlighted by the richness of its biodiversity.
It constitutes since ancient times a prime area of exploitation of natural resources, such as water, pasture, and agriculture, favoured by the depression and accumulation of water in this area, turning it into the most fertile land of the entire mountain range.
It tells stories and brings up memories of times of community land for pasture, often in the origin of rivalries and land dispute, of the time of the “watchmen” (several herds gathered into one and conducted by one or more shepherds), of the shelters that protected the region's shepherds and those coming from the Estrela Mountains due to transhumance.
