Dating from the first half of the XIX century the first intentions to build a place for events in Oliveira de Azeméis, a space where performances could be brought to the stage and other cultural events. It will be in 1851, that was set up a company to build the “Novo Theatro Oliveirense” in Urgal, in a land bought to António Castro Corveira Corte-Real, in March of the same year. The first performance is brought to the scene in 1855 (the play "Lucrezia Borgia") the building wasn’t finished yet. The building would only be completed in the beginning of the following decade. Until the first decade of the twentieth century worked as a theatre.
In 1915, is inaugurated a new space the “Teatro Avenida”, property of the family Alegria, located in "Rua Pinto Basto” (Pinto Basto Street).
Until the inauguration of the “Teatro da Avenida”, the “Teatro Oliveirense” served as a stage to project films under taken by Mr. António Maria da Cruz, between 1909 and 1911, and by the company “Alegria e Cia” between 1912 and 1914.
