Large basilica and with an ambitious eclectic design, dated from 1889, it was conceived by Father António Domingues Ferreira, professor of drawing at the College of Espírito Santo in Braga.
Granite is used profusely, both in the exterior and interior constructive elements (pillars, pilasters, columns and portals), as well as in sculptural decoration.
Its construction carried out by the community of Jesuits, with the support of the population, was stopped in 1910, when the order was expelled and only resumed in 1927.
In 1948 the external works were practically completed.
In the whole, there is the dome in the cruise area, which is topped by the large sculpture of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, in marble.
It has neoclassical dark wood altarpieces, which house large naturalistic images of famous Maia woodworkers, namely José Ferreira Tedim and Oficina dos Irmãos Maia.
Location: Póvoa de Varzim
