The Environmental Education and Interpretive Centre of Corno de Bico (CEIA), open to the public since 2007, is located in Chã de Lamas, parish of Vascões. It was first housed in the agricultural association of Vascões, which was revamped and expanded to accommodate some of its equipment. The CEIA structure consists of the old teacher’s house (restored and expanded to house the welcome centre), the old primary school, which today houses the kitchen and canteen, and the Environmental Education Resource Centre. Whereas the old buildings were restored to preserve their original features, the new ones were built so as to interfere as little as possible with the visual impact of the site. All landscaping respects the surrounding areas: wood panelling in buildings helps to integrate them in the remarkable surrounding landscape. Another key feature is how the building stands on the site, not interfering with the landscape and resembling a tree-house.
The CEIA includes areas for research and the dissemination of the natural resources typical of the Corno de Bico Protected Area, specifically workshops, exhibition room, auditorium, laboratory, and other facilities. The centre adds more value to the region, in terms of tourism and education: it offers visitors a number of environmental awareness suggestions, making the visit to the Corno de Bico Protected Area an unforgettable experience of leisure and learning. The Centre is open to school visits or groups of scholars wanting to enjoy a richer education filled with interactions. The activity of CEIA involves scientific dissemination, education for sustainability, and promotion of public involvement.
