Born in 1817 and died in 1884, this is, without a doubt, the most emblematic in the wide gallery of heroes of the region. Simple men, fishermen by trade, they moulded their behaviour according to the precepts of mutual assistance required by life in a community. Cego do Maio, José Rodrigues Maio by birth, risked his life dozens of times, restoring it to his fellowmen and countless other castaways. His heroic feats earned him several awards, including the greatest national award: the Colar da Ordem da Torre e Espada, do Valor, Lealdade e Mérito (Order of the Tower and Sword, of Valour, Loyalty and Merit), insignia personally bestowed on him by the King, D. Luís I.
