The Castelo de Lindoso (Castle of Lindoso) is supposed to have been built in the reign of King Afonso III, near 1250 as a result of a defense policy in border areas, and was extended in the reign of D. Dinis. This castle was located 4800 meters distance from the border with Spain and played a very important role in the campaigns of Restauração (Portuguese Restoration). Preserving its medieval architecture and being classified as Monumento Nacional (National Monument) since 1910, the castle is a small square shape, with rounded corners and two square towers.
In the Castle there is also a permanent exhibition about the human occupation in this region, from the Neolithic to the present.
