Bridge Seca – 19th century

Barcelos
Description
Teotónio da Fonseca, referring to the railway infrastructure built along the whole line of Minho, called it "the highest and elegant work (...) of all the lines," In fact, the Bridge Seca or Viaduct of Durrães, as it is also known, has 130 years and it is the most iconic construction designed by former Royal Company of Portuguese Railways. Extraordinarily big, the bridge functioned as a "guard" of D. Manuel II during the lunch offered by the Adviser Novais Leite, in 1908. It has 22 metres high and 255 metres long. The 16 round arcs in square stone, all equal, have each one eight and a half of span. Imitating some of the Roman techniques, the arches are based on solid square stone pillars.
