"Vilarandelo" Parish Church

Valpaços
Description

The “Vilarandelo” Parish Church dedicated to Saint Vincent, was probably erected during the 17th century, although on top of a former temple, presumably of medieval origin.  Framing the entrance, there is a perfect round arch surmounted by an oculus. The gable was interrupted to receive the friezes that served as a basis to the double bell, ending with a Malta cross. This element is particularly important, as it can reveal the Order's presence in the region and their linking to the construction of the church. The access to the bell is done exteriorly, through a side staircase. Around the temple we find a series of Crosses. The exuberance of its interior contrasts with the austerity of its outer space: the nave and chancel are fully covered with proto-baroque gilded carving, tiles and painting in an art work that bears testimony to the importance and vitality of this type of churches covered in gold in places far from large urban centres, witnessing, on the other hand, the aesthetics concern updated by those responsible for conducting the work to the interior.

In the chancel, the gilded and polychromic altarpiece, occupies the entire top wall, integrating two side doors that match the upper zone to the two paintings. In the centre, in the twisted columns, were framed the saints' niches that are prolonging up the altarpiece's archivolts, and defining a platform with a pyramidal throne. In the side panels, and on the tiles exist several gilded carved paintings, representing scenes from Jesus Passion.
