The Viewpoint of São Domingos is one of the most spectacular vantage points of the Douro landscape, but even the most extraordinary.
From here we can sight up lands of Viseu districts, Vila Real and Porto. Right in front of our eyes stands the imposing Marão Mountains and at our feet is the city of Peso da Régua and further on, the city of Porto. To the west we can see the stairway and the sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Remedios in Lamego.
In this place was built almost a thousand years, the Chapel of São Domingos. A typical example of the hermitages of medieval pilgrimages, the earliest reference to São Dominigos date 1163.
Afonso V will have visited the hermitage with Queen Isabel in 1454. Also his son John II and his wife Leonor have done it years later to ask for divine intervention to be granted successor . They returned to Santo Domingo a second time at the end of 1483, already with his man child, Prince Alfonso.
In fact, couples who seek to have children and had trouble getting it slept in the open on the "propitiatory stone" or "fertility crag", which still can be seen next to the sacristy of the chapel door.
