Tresminas Roman Mining Compound

Vila Pouca de Aguiar
Description
The Roman Mining Complex of Tresminas, classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1997, was one of the most important sources of gold for the Roman Empire. Gold was extracted here for nearly 250 years, mainly between the first and third centuries A. D. which resulted in the creation of open pit mining known as cortas, as well as an underground system of wells and tunnels. In addition to its historical and cultural legacy, the Roman Mining Complex of Tresminas also has an important natural heritage. The high diversity of habitats, such as hills interspersed with deep agricultural valleys, areas which are highly expodes to strong winds, as well as more sheltered underground tunnels, support a high local biodiversity.
