The result of successive sieges and battles, the castle of Freixo de Espada à Cinta was reduced to a heptagonal tower, known as the “Galo”(Cock) and to the walls sections, skirting the manueline parish church. Freixo de Espada a Cinta is just about four kilometers from the river Douro, because of that is the place more predictable for the construction of the fortification. The King D. Dinis ordered to rebuild and erect this fortress, due to this action we have the enlargement of the walled fence and the beautiful Galo bell tower.
