The tower of Refóios is one of the best (and earliest) preserved examples of a specific type of manor house known as domus fortis. Characterized by an isolated tower, "inspired by the towers to protect the castles", has been used "for small strains, in the process of social mobility", the earliest examples dating from the 12fth century.
