The People’s Mill Museum and Interpretation Centre

Fafe
Description
Aboim is a tourist attraction in our council, where visitors can learn about the rural heritage of villages on the mountain slopes and about the five surrounding mountains: Marão, Gerês, Cabreira, Serra de Agra and Maroiço.
The village of Aboim has a very unique mill from the 18th century. The local council and the City Council of Fafe joined efforts and restored the mill using traditional materials and techniques. Thanks to the involvement of the community, memories were gathered in this place. In 2007, the windmill formed part of the Portuguese Mill Network and the International Molinological Society.
To further increase knowledge about the local customs and mores, the parish decided to open the Interpretation Centre – Aldeia Pedagógica da Montanha e do Centeio. This multipurpose interactive space offers “mini-explorations and workshops” where visitors can learn, relive and remember. This educational facility also offers pedagogical activities and guided tours: Windmill; “Mountain, Rye and Alchemy” exhibition; sensory experiences – Mountain Senses and Mountain Commandments; Scientific laboratory; Teatrinho Mágico theatre.
