The Fortress of Monção

Monção
Description
The walls of Monção are located on the bank of the river Minho, and on the other side, the  Fortress of Salvaterra, in Galiza. Follow the perimeter of the walls, and enjoy the excellent panoramic views over the river. You will find a beautiful scenery over the park and the Spa - you won't resist coming down and explore this pleasant park!

Be a part of the history of Monção, breathing the medieval atmosphere of the fortress, which was built in 1306 by D. Dinis who was involved in a long war against Castela, and ordered the construction of a castle with a tower and a walled fence around the village. Later, during the Restoration wars, the medieval fence and the castle were replaced by a kind of Vauban fortress.

Nowadays, a small part remains from the original castle ordered by D. Dinis. Only a fragment is visible close to the Neris sidewalk. In the neighbourhood we find the munitions store-room with a flagestone roof and surrounded by a high wall. Two gates, still remain, Salvaterra and Rosal, which deserves a visit.
