The original name of this place was “Mother of Water” due the existence of a large underground spring.
According to the land registry, this temple, dedicated to “Senhora da Hora”, was commissioned in 1514 by Francisco Aleixo, to fulfil a promise made in exchange for the grace of having achild. In 1620 the foundations of the temple, dedicated to “Nossa Senhora das Sete Bicas” were laid by the architect Gonçalo Vaz. Beside the temple lies the “Nossa Senhora da Penha de França” Chapel, built at the end of the 17th century and integrated in the “Quinta dos Minotes” complex.
The Fountain of the Seven Spouts is a reconstruction from 1893, but references to the “Senhora da Hora” fountains can be found as early as 1623.
The tradition to attribute mystical fertility powers to the fountain is still alive today.
