Celebrated in Palmeira de Faro on June 13.
In Palmeira de Faro, is celebrated on June the Santo António religious festival.
The Chapel of Santo António, according to registration on the main façade, was built in 1776, but local historians point to the true date of its construction in the year 1613, referring to the facade date for any remodeling or reconstruction that has taken place in the meantime temple. In front of the chapel is a huge mall that ends with a cruise - Santo António - all of it full of linden trees which would replace the eucalyptus trees that existed there until 1992's "obligation to feast on the day with the Holy sermon, sung mass and more whatever you want, "was contemplated in the statutes of the confraternity instituted in 1794. Remotely foundation, this pilgrimage was the largest in the county however, with the passage of time, some traditions were forgotten and thus also its importance and greatness were losing. In days of yore here transaccionavam oxen, with the same place crowded livestock contest. One of the peculiar traditions of this pilgrimage was called "Dinner of the Holy" - the "treasurer" of the brotherhood had a duty to kill and cook a calf, after putting down with a basket of clarinhas and a pipe of wine to water such repast attended by friends of the same; the "Missa dos Pássaros"; and "Vaca das Cordas".
At the nascent national highway thirteen (EN 13), the path behind Santo António Cemetery Fao, there is a centuries-old chapel dedicated to St. Anthony and a very ancient source. The temple built in the last quarter of the nineteenth century has a great architectural simplicity external and internal. In front faces north, a set of granite columns with capitals, where you can see a small image of St. Anthony on the pedestal with a large scallop shell or intaglio niche. Devotion to Santo António must have been accentuated by the coming of the Franciscans Franqueira in the second half of the seventeenth century. Like other parts of the country, the rite launching stones, coins or more recently, by boyfriends for a hole in the fascia of the source - transformed into a "matchmaker stone" - is very old and still put into practice. Who certainly hit home this year; sometimes fail to correspond to the years of waiting for marriage. At this party we still celebrated in Fao, on the day of the saint, were linked to rituals agrarian cults, such as "boi do fogo" (a solar cult), the ascent to the greasy pole (or phallic cult of virility) and breach of stuffed pitcher (worship of fertility and abundance), now almost extinct.
