The Sanctuary Of Our Lady Sameiro is the second Marian Sanctuary in Portugal. It is an attraction for thousands of pilgrims, tourists and visitors all year around.
It is surrounded by a magnificent woodland and it provides a superb view of the city of Braga. It allows a wonderful contact with nature and it inspires serenity, peace, devotion and peace of mind.
It perpetuates the triumph of the Immaculate Mary and the memory of the dogmatic definition of the Immaculate Conception by Pope Pius IX.
The amazing sculputure of Our Lady of Sameiro was made in Rome by Eugénio Maccagnani.
The first stone of the temple was laid in 1890.
Important moments of the history of the temple:
- The pinnacle was built in the thirties of the 20th century
- The marble High Altar was consecrated in 1941
- The cross monument was inaugurated in 1953
- The monuments dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Pope Pius IX were inaugurated in 1954
- In the same year of 1954 the silver tabernacle appears
- The crypt was inaugurated on 17th June of 1979 to welcome the crowds that regulary visit Sameiro
- In 1982 Sameiro was visited by Pope John Paul II
