This romantic wood was included in the Nossa Senhora da Piedade e dos Santos Passos Sanctuary project in order to be a Public Leisure Park. The big trees started to be planted in 1889, as well as the construction of several characteristic elements of these spaces, such as benches, a cave, a bandstand and a bazaar of gifts imitating trunks and branches of the cork oak tree, and two bridges in wood. The stairs, the fountain, the lakes and the canalised water were built in 1897. The works had a new impulse in the 1920s when new australias blackwood, plane trees, acacias and oaks trees were planted. A small pond with fountain, a large central staircase leading to the shrine, the largest lake, and new park benches were built at the same time. In the years 1950-1970 the big lake was drained and the Baile do Lago took place in the inside.
