The "Sanjoaninas Festivities" in Esposende and in Marinhas, reach the enthusiasm splendour that the date of the 24 June offers, ordering the tradition that at this stage the rising of paper balloons into the luminous skies; lighting of the bonfires around which people sing and dance; richly decorated arches are paraded, and organized popular marches happily march throughout the main streets of the localities.
The S. João is a popular festival of happiness and liveliness. No one should miss the traditional sardines done on charcoal fire, accompanied with the special bread and the red wine for the dry throats of the cheerful people.
