Brief description: From the hill of S. Domingos, in Fontelo, we can admire the beautiful picture of the Douro landscape. This is even considered the best place to enjoy the beauty of the Alto Douro Wine Region. It includes the towns of Lamego, Tarouca, Resende, Mesão Frio, Régua, Santa Marta de Penaguião and Vila Real, among others. The spectacle of farms falling into the river Douro on both sides is extraordinary. Even ahead of us, we can admire the imposing mountain range of the Marão, which is an authentic gateway to the region of Tras-os-Montes and Alto Douro for those coming from the north coast. We can see the town of Régua from the foot of the viewpoint and the Meadas Mountain on the left, and more below the city of Lamego. At S. Domingos Mountain there is also a campsite equipped with all necessary infrastructures, which can be used by the nature lovers. The hermitage dates from 1163, the first known reference of S. Domingos. D. Afonso V and Queen D. Isabel must have visited the shrine in 1454, during his trip to the battle of Toro. Also his son, King D. João II with his wife D. Leonor visited the shrine same years later. Asking for divine intervention to be granted a successor was the reason for the visit of King D. João II and his wife. In 1483, they returned to S. Domingos with their son, Prince D. Afonso, born on May 18
