South of Marmelal there are some ruins of schist houses, dwelling houses and mills: Father Calvo ruins. Here have formerly existed a farm (Pai Calvo Farm), also known as "Eiras de Pai Calvo."
The occupation of the place shall go back to the mid-seventeenth century, when the Douro wines began to be exported successfully and the Douro viticulture began to expand. The history of this place is so linked to the history of the cultivation of vineyards in the Douro.
In the eighteenth century Father Calvo was a prominent place in the Douro wine structure. In Pombaline demarcations 1757 Pai Calvo Farm was included in the "probable trading post zone", the second best rating, following the Factory.
The place is today abandoned and in ruins. The desertification of “Pai Calvo” was due to the plague of phylloxera that devastated the Douro and caused a "to turn the page" in the history of the region.
