This is the best way to know Melgaço and the Minho River ! A route that captivates us along the riverside walkway, showing us the beauty of the region’s landscape. The route starts at the Town's centre, next to the Matriz and the Misericórdia churches, temples that fascinate with their history and beauty of decorations. Side by side, the sublime Solar do Alvarinho from the 17th century, whose mission is to promote and divulge the Alvarinho wine.
Next, we leave the historic centre towards the Centro de Estágios do Monte Prado. It’s a splendid compound that integrates a stadium, an athletic track, tennis courts, a picnic park, a mini golf field and a delightful pool with water jets, all of these opened to the general public and where you’ll able to have a good time. The route continues along a water channel towards Monte Prado, a very nice place with a four stars hotel, a restaurant and a youth hostel, everything surrounded by wide forests and with the Minho River already at sight. Along the riverside walkway you’ll find several fishing places, stone walls built against the river stream – some of the few sites where the old fishing art traditions are still preserved and used to catch shad and lamprey.
The stroll ends at the locality of Peso, land of well-known and long appreciated thermal waters. The whole spa is surrounded by old trees that impress for their dimensions and by buildings of architectural relevance: the Fonte Principal, the Fonte Nova, the Buvete, the Balneário, the Oficina de Engarrafamento and the old Hotel of Peso. The perfect idyllic scenery where to end this route that certainly will make you wish for more!
