The landscape of the river Ave valley stands by its bridges, watermills and mills together with the dams. Over the years, in a distance of about 10 km., several mills, including Azenha da Barca and Azenha de Bairros, were built on the left bank of the river Ave, taking advantage of the driving force of the water. These hydraulic mills were used to grind the bread, to step the wool, to grind the bark of trees (oaks), to macerate the linen and sawing woods. Some also removed the water to irrigate farmland.
