The Ruínas Arqueológicas da Praça da República are an original museologic nucleus located at the Town’s center. It’s underneath the earth, so you’ll have to climb down a small ladder which leads to an interesting medieval trench.
There, we’ll be able to see a set of well preserved archaeological ruins and some remains of the ancient fortress. After the trench, it stands out the remains of a stone breastplate and various pavements from different ages. In order to facilitate our understanding of the ruins, there are some informative posters about the Town's defensive system from the 13th to the 17th century.
Also, don’t miss other pieces exhibited, found during the excavations, such as a catapult projectile and many throwing stones.
Come and learn some of Melgaço's medieval history and take the chance to saunter around this magnificent square with plenty of buildings full of architectonic and historic interest.
