This Pilgrims' Hostel is highly used because of its strategic position between Barcelos and Ponte de Lima. It is already an international reference in this medieval pilgrimage.
In 1633, Belchior da Encarnação, natural from Basto, decided to recover the hermitage next to the Chapel of Nossa Senhora of Portela in Tamel. He constructed some houses where he lived in lonely penitence during 40 years. António Pinheiro Velho, from the collegiate church of Barcelos joined him in 1673. Both hermits established the Recoleta da Portela. In 1720, it had seven brothers, but in 1737 it only had two and it was donated to the Order of S. Francisco. In 1745, it was delivered to the Archbishop of Braga and then sold to particulars.
This building was acquired by the City Hall, in 2007, to create a Pilgrims' Hostel. The recovering works began in August 2008.
The Hostel of the Casa da Recoleta de Tamel S. Pedro de Fins was inaugurated by the Mayor, Miguel Costas Gomes, on 18th April 2010.
