We are at the heart of the Alto Douro Wine Region where the well-known Port Wine is produced. The vine has been cultivated on these steep slopes for many centuries. To accomplish this, man had to extract rocksfrom the subsoil to build walls to sustain the scarce cultivable land. The terraces go along the hachure lines, followingthe slopes, building sinuous and harmonious lines.
This hard and tenacious work has created a cultural landscape, of an extraordinary beauty, forming monumental amphitheatre staircases situated along the hillsides. In 2001 UNESCO declared AltoDouro Wine Region World Heritage of Humanity.
