Ponte romana e medieval (Roman and medieval Bridge)

Ponte de Lima
Description
Classified as a Monument of national Interest

This is a national monument of the first order: the landmark which gave Ponte de Lima its name, the famous bridge of Roman origin. The town could not have a more beautiful visiting card. On the River Lima, with the Church of Santo António da Torre Velha in the background, the bridge is beautiful from all angles and perspectives, by day or by night. Look closely at the perfectly round arches and the horizontal deck protected by guards. Legend has it that faced with the beauty of the banks of the Lima, the legions of the Roman Empire thought they were seeing the River Lethes, the enchanted river of forgetfulness. Hesitant, the soldiers only dared to cross the waters after the general, Decimus Junius Brutus, had done so, calling the soldiers by name as proof he had not forgotten. The experience was not forgotten and this lovely land has remained etched on the memory of men. For first-time visitors to Ponte de Lima, crossing the bridge is a necessary experience. As you cross, remember that thousands and thousands of pilgrims have trod this way before on their way to Santiago de Compostela. The crossing has always had great importance in Alto Minho. In the 18th century, it was D. Pedro who had it built and by the end of the middle ages, it was the only safe passage anywhere along the River Lima. So that you can remember it later, don't forget to photograph this scene and to record the experience in your travel notebook.
