In a small square in Avintes, next to the Volunteer Firemen Headquarters we find the “Pedra da Audiência”, historical-cultural milestone that was settled in this place in 1742 and it is formed by a rectangular table surrounded by three granite benches. It is classified as Building of Public Interest since 1996.
Having a figurative character, it represented the enclosure’s autonomy in the administration of the justice. The trials – “audiências” were held once a week and were directed by the elected judge that hold a red stick, symbol of authority, and assisted by two officials: a notary and a bailiff.
