In medieval times, the Riverside of the county starts to detach as an important shipyard and trading post, reaching great prosperity in the XVIII century, when the fixation of foreigners and Portuguese, craftsmen, merchants and businessmen in the houses and warehouses in this area. The Port wine is its biggest richness and emblem tucked in the historical centre cellars, where it acquires new taste, quality and prolonged life. Filled with interesting motives the historical centre of Vila Nova de Gaia is, today, a mixture of sensations between the splendour of its historical heritage and the modernity of its public spaces. Are part of it important monuments such as the Serra do Pilar Monastery, Convent Corpus Christi; public spaces of excellency and modernity, like the marginal next to the river, along which we can see the ancient Rabelo boats; the piers of the cruises in the river and the “Cais de Gaia” where we find several restaurants, bars and shops.
