This was the first protected area to be founded in 1971. Peneda Gerês is of particular note because it is the only National Park existing in the country. It covers an area of 70,000 hectares. The National Park extends through five municipalities among which Melgaço is part of with
10,035 hectares located between Castro Laboreiro and Lamas de Mouro, which makes about 14% of the total area. Peneda Gerês comprises a ridge of mountains (Cantábrica) and a heterogeneous landscape: peaks, valleys and plateaus. It is well known for its flora and fauna (rare or non existent in any other part of the country: Iris Boissieri (iris), feto do Gerês (frond), Anémona dos Bosques (anemone), Orvalhinha (carnivorous plant), Mata de Carvalhos e de Sobreiros (oak and cork oak trees), Azevinho (holly), etc., and animals such as Bovino Barrosão (ox or cow), Garrano Selvagem (horse), o Cão de Castro Laboreiro (dog), Javali (wild boar) and Lobo Ibérico (Iberic Wolf). The park offer lovers of walks and hikes a wide range of walks and hikes, with or without guides, as for example: Castro Laboreiro interpretative hike (between Castro Laboreiro and Lamas de Mouro). Some walks are organized by Lamas de Mouro Campsite managers.
