Dependent on the municipality of Penafiel, the Museum is, for over 50 years, a permanent structure, foundation of the politics of planning and cultural resources management of the municipality. It has an active intervention in the preservation and promotion of significant values of the movable, immovable and immaterial heritage. Its constitution, since 1948, next to the Library, in the small palace of Barão do Calvário, was due to the persistence of Abílio Miranda, its first director. Right now, the Museum is located in the small palace Pereira do Lago, in Paço Street, a building recovered by the architects Fernando Távora and Bernardo Távora. The Municipal Museum benefits from a large area for exhibition and services, which allow receiving visitors and users with quality. Therefore, it has earned the prize for The Best Portuguese Museum 2010, given by the Associação Portuguesa de Museologia.
