The new Municipal Stadium of Braga, designed by the well-known architect Eduardo Souto Moura, is only one of the sportive attractions which constitute the North Urban Park of Braga. The Stadium, inaugurated on the 30th December 2003, shelters 30 000 people in two stands. The stands are built laterally to the football pitch and expand from north to south. Actually, the structural concept underlying the architectonical plan of the stadium lays on a combination between the covering dome and the stands. Basically one can say that there are three main autonomous groups of structures: the east stands, the dome and the west stands and the building above the pitch. The overlay of the two stands is one single structure consisting of a pre-effort cable system settled in two high rigidity beams, directed horizontally and built on the top of both stands.
The dome is the most striking element of the municipal stadium. It is a completely new structure, the only one of its kind in the world. Teh dome is made of 68 cables, which in their turn, bear the weight of two concrete slabs. These are subdivided 1518 smaller prefabricated slabs, which totally cover the two stands. The dome is supported by two large girders, comprising the finial of the East and West stands.
