Monument to Nicolau Coelho (navigator from Felgueiras)

Felgueiras
Description

Nicolau Coelho, born in Felgueiras, was a great aristocrat and navigator in the 15th and 16 th centuries. He took part in the expedition to discover the maritime path to India, in 1498. In 1500, with Pedro Álvares Cabral, he was the first to step on the lands of Santa Cruz.

By the end of January 1554, during the return trip to Portugal, a violent storm broke up the entire Portuguese fleet, which never made it to its destination. Nicolau Coelho has a monument (with a bust) in his honour in Praça da Comunidade Lusíada, as well as a mural in the Vasco da Gama building in the city of Felgueiras.
